The rule
How the 180-day window works
Short-stay visitors can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. The window rolls: for any date, look at that day and the 179 days before it, and count every day you were in the area. Entry and exit days both count as full days, and a day counts once even if you crossed a border that day. 90 days is within the limit; 91 is over.
The app
Keep your trips in Tally
This calculator counts days the same way as Tally, our Schengen day counter for iPhone and Android.
- Keeps your trips
- Type each trip once. Tally keeps your past and future trips and shows the days left today.
- Warns before a trip goes over
- If a saved future trip would take you over the limit, Tally says which trip and from which date.
- Shows every counted day
- See which days count and why, with trips outside Schengen left out.
- Offline, no account
- Works offline with no sign-up. Your trips stay on your phone, and you type the dates: no GPS.
EES and ETIAS
Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records every entry and exit of non-EU short-stay travelers at the Schengen external border, in place of passport stamps. It calculates your remaining days and flags overstays automatically.
The 90/180 rule itself did not change. What changed is that an overstay is now on record the day it happens, so it pays to know your own count before you book.
ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers. It hasn't started yet, and the EU says it will announce the start date months in advance. It doesn't change how days are counted.
FAQ
Common questions
Do the entry and exit days count?
Yes. The day you arrive and the day you leave each count as a full day, even if you were only there for an hour.
Does leaving the Schengen Area reset my 90 days?
No. Leaving only stops new days being added. Each past day drops out of the count once it is more than 179 days before the date you check.
Which countries are in the Schengen Area?
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Days in the UK, Ireland or Cyprus are not Schengen days.
I have a residence permit or long-stay visa. Does this apply?
This calculator treats every day you enter as a short stay. Time on a Schengen country’s residence permit or long-stay visa follows different rules, so check with that country.
How do I find the latest date I can stay?
Add the stay you are on with its entry date and leave the exit date blank. The calculator shows the last day you can stay that keeps you, and any later stays you added, within the limit.
Is my trip data saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent, and the page has no analytics.
