Plamp: Privacy Policy

Last updated 5 November 2026.

This policy covers the iPhone app Plant Identifier: Plamp, published by Setout Labs LLC ("we"). It explains what stays on your iPhone, what leaves it, and how to delete your data. Our company-wide privacy policy covers this website and our other products.

The short version

  • Plamp has no account and no sign-in. It doesn't ask for your name or email. The app creates a random anonymous ID so our server can count your identifications and health checks.
  • To identify a plant or check its health, the photos you take or pick are sent to our server and on to Anthropic's AI, Claude. Our server keeps a copy of each photo under your anonymous ID; it is deleted automatically after 30 days, or immediately with Settings → Delete my data.
  • Your saved plants, their photos, watering schedules and reminders stay on your iPhone.
  • The app also uses Mixpanel for usage analytics, Sentry for crash reports, Superwall to record subscriptions and Apple's attribution service to learn whether an install came from one of our Apple Ads campaigns. Payment goes through Apple.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites, show ads, or sell your data.

What stays on your iPhone

Plamp keeps these in the app's own storage on your iPhone:

  • your saved plants: name, scientific name, room, light, watering schedule, when you last watered, and the identification's confidence;
  • the photos you save with a plant;
  • your answers to the onboarding questions, your reminder and theme settings, whether you agreed to send photos to AI, and whether your free identification is used;
  • the watering reminders it schedules, which show the plant's name and room, plus a daily reminder if you turn it on and a reminder before a free trial ends.

Reminders are local notifications created on your iPhone; no push service is used. The pet-safety information comes from an ASPCA table built into the app, not from AI. Apple's device backups may include the app's files.

Photos, identification and health checks

Before your first scan, Plamp asks you to agree to sending photos to AI. When you identify a plant or run a health check, the app sends 1 to 3 photos to our server. Before they leave your iPhone, the app shrinks large ones and re-encodes every photo without its metadata, so location (GPS) and camera details are not sent.

Our server sends the photos to Anthropic's Claude API, which returns likely species, care needs or possible health problems. For a health check it also sends the name you saved the plant under. Anthropic processes them as our service provider under its commercial terms.

Our server stores a copy of each photo in private storage that only our server can read, under your anonymous ID. Each copy is deleted automatically after 30 days, or immediately with Delete my data. It also stores how many identifications and health checks you use each day, to apply the free and Plamp Pro limits.

Please photograph plants, not people. If a photo shows other things, such as a room or a person, they are sent and stored with it.

Usage analytics (Mixpanel)

Mixpanel receives usage events linked to a random identifier the Mixpanel library creates for this installation and to your anonymous ID, along with device details it adds, such as device model and iOS version. The events are:

  • that the app was opened and which screen you opened;
  • which onboarding step you see and whether you completed or skipped it, never your answers;
  • whether you allowed notifications;
  • the Plamp Pro screen being shown or closed, and purchases and restores started, completed, cancelled or failed, with the product, period, price, currency and whether it had a free trial;
  • the rating prompt being considered or shown, or the App Store listing being opened from Settings;
  • the Apple Ads attribution result (see below).

Each event also carries the app version and build, your subscription status (free, trial or paid) and the country from your device settings. Events never include your photos, identification results, plant names or rooms. The app does not use Mixpanel's automatic event collection.

Apple Ads attribution

When Plamp first opens, it asks iOS for an attribution token and sends it to Apple's attribution service, which replies whether the install came from one of our Apple Ads campaigns and, if so, the campaign, ad group and keyword identifiers. Plamp sends that reply to Mixpanel as described above. The token itself is not sent to Mixpanel. This uses no advertising identifier and no tracking permission.

Crash reports (Sentry)

If the app or our server hits an error, Sentry receives a report with the error, the code location (stack trace), the app version, device model and iOS version, your anonymous ID and a trail of recent app activity. Sentry also receives when each app session starts and ends, and performance timing for a sample of app activity. Before a report is sent, the app removes database text that could contain plant details, and our server removes tokens, email addresses and request bodies. Reports never include your photos. Sentry keeps reports under the retention settings of our account with it.

Emailing support

If you choose Contact support in Settings, your mail app opens a message to us. Nothing is sent unless you send it. We use your email address and message only to answer you.

Where data is processed

Our service providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires it, transfers from the EEA, UK or Switzerland rely on the providers' standard contractual clauses.

What leaves your iPhone

Our app and service providers collect the following data for the stated purposes. None of it is used to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

  • Diagnostics → Crash Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Diagnostics → Other Diagnostic Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Diagnostics → Performance Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Identifiers → Device ID: Analytics, App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Identifiers → User ID: Analytics, App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Purchases → Purchase History: Analytics, App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Usage Data → Advertising Data: Analytics; not linked to you.
  • Usage Data → Product Interaction: Analytics; not linked to you.
  • User Content → Photos or Videos: App Functionality; not linked to you.

We use five service providers. They process data only on our behalf, and we require each to give your data the same or equivalent protection as this Privacy Policy.

  • Mixpanel (usage analytics). Receives the usage events described under Usage analytics (Mixpanel) above, including the Apple Ads campaign identifiers. The app tells Mixpanel not to use your network address to estimate your location; it sends the country from your device settings instead.
  • Sentry (crash reports). Receives the crash and error reports described under Crash reports (Sentry) above.
  • Superwall (subscriptions). Records your App Store purchases and subscription status for our subscription dashboard, and tells our server when a subscription starts, renews or ends. It receives your anonymous ID, basic device details and the purchase details. The Plamp Pro screen is part of the app, and payment is handled by Apple; we never see your card or billing details.
  • Supabase (app backend). Runs our server: the anonymous ID, the stored photos, your daily usage counts and your subscription records described above.
  • Anthropic (AI identification and health checks). Receives the 1 to 3 photos you send for an identification or health check, and for a health check the name you saved the plant under, and returns the result. Anthropic processes them as our service provider under its commercial terms.

What we do not do

Plamp does not track you across other companies' apps or websites, does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), and shows no ads. Its privacy manifest declares no tracking. We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not send your photos to anyone except Anthropic.

Deleting your data

Settings → Delete my data deletes, on our server, the photos stored under your anonymous ID, your usage counts and your subscription records, then the anonymous ID itself. On your iPhone it deletes your plants, photos, settings and scheduled reminders. It keeps one yes-or-no note in the iPhone keychain that your free identification was used, so it isn't granted again; the note holds no identifier. A subscription stays with your Apple ID; deleting data does not cancel it.

Use Delete my data before you remove the app. Removing the app deletes everything on your iPhone except that keychain note, but the records on our server, and photos until their 30 days are up, stay under an anonymous ID that we can't connect to you or your phone, so we can't find them on request.

Analytics events and crash reports are kept by Mixpanel and Sentry under the retention settings of our accounts with them and are not removed by Delete my data. They are tied to random identifiers, not to your name or email. To ask about them, email us and say it's about Plamp.

For data held by our service providers, email us at support@setout.ai and we will respond within 30 days.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, to object to its use, and to complain to your data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If we learn that a child under 13 (or the minimum age where they live) has given us personal data, we will delete it. Parents or guardians who believe this has happened should email us.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date above. For material changes we will give notice before they take effect.
