Leap: Privacy Policy

Last updated 27 October 2026.

This policy covers the iPhone app Leap, published by Setout Labs LLC ("we"). It explains what stays on your iPhone, what leaves it, and how to delete your data. Our company-wide privacy policy covers this website and our other products.

The short version

  • Leap is an iPhone ear-training app. The placement test, a weekly retake and one drill a day are free; Leap Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. There is no account or sign-in, and no advertising in the app. Your test results, practice history and settings stay on your iPhone.
  • Leap uses Mixpanel for usage analytics, Sentry for crash reports, Superwall for purchases, and Apple's attribution service to learn whether an install came from one of our Apple Ads campaigns.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites, show ads, or sell your data.

What stays on your iPhone

Leap keeps these in a database in the app's own storage. We have no server for them and never receive them:

  • each placement test: when you took it, your Leap score and your pitch, interval, chord and scale-degree scores;
  • each drill you finish: the level, how many you got right and when;
  • each answer you give: the question, the answer you chose, whether it was right and when.

Your settings (sound, Say the answer, Time to think, theme and daily reminder) and small app flags, such as when the app last asked for a rating, are stored in iOS user defaults.

Hands-free and the lock screen

In hands-free mode, Leap plays each question, waits, then says the answer aloud. The voice is generated on your iPhone by iOS; the text is not sent anywhere. Leap does not use the microphone and records nothing.

While hands-free plays, the current question appears in the iOS Now Playing controls on your lock screen, so anyone who can see your lock screen can see it.

Permissions

  • Notifications. Used only for reminders you turn on: the daily practice reminder, and a reminder two days before a free trial ends. Leap asks when you set a practice time, turn on Daily reminder in Settings, or start a trial. You can say no and still use the app.

Leap requests no microphone, camera, photos, location, contacts or Health access.

Usage analytics (Mixpanel)

Mixpanel receives usage events tied to a random identifier the Mixpanel library creates for this installation, along with device and operating system details it adds, such as model and iOS version. The events are:

  • that the app was installed or opened, and which screen you open;
  • that you finished the placement test, with your score and whether it was a retake;
  • that you finished a drill, with its level and how many you got right;
  • that you started hands-free, with its level;
  • whether you allowed notifications, and rating prompt steps;
  • upgrade screen and purchase steps: the screen opening or closing, and a purchase or restore starting, completing, failing or being cancelled, with the product, price, currency and whether it included a trial.

Each event also carries the app version and build and whether you are on the free plan, a trial or Leap Pro. If you opened Leap from a link with campaign tags, or installed it from one of our Apple Ads campaigns, events carry those campaign identifiers too. Your individual answers are never sent. The app does not use Mixpanel's automatic event collection.

Apple Ads attribution

When Leap first opens (or on a later launch, if that attempt fails), it asks iOS for an attribution token and sends it to Apple's attribution service, which replies whether the install came from one of our Apple Ads campaigns and, if so, the campaign, ad group and keyword identifiers. Leap sends that reply to Mixpanel as described above. The token itself is not stored or sent to Mixpanel. This uses no advertising identifier and no tracking permission.

Crash reports (Sentry)

If the app crashes or hits an error, Sentry receives a report with the error, the code location (stack trace), the app version, device, operating system and runtime details, a random installation identifier, and a trail of recent app warnings and steps. Leap strips database details from error messages before they are sent. Sentry also receives performance timing for a sample of app activity, such as how long the app takes to start. The app does not ask Sentry to attach personal information.

Purchases (Superwall and Apple)

Leap uses Superwall to record purchases and restores of Leap Pro. Superwall receives your purchase status, the product, device and app details, and an identifier Apple assigns to this app on your iPhone. Apple handles payment through your Apple ID; we and Superwall never see your card or billing details.

What leaves your iPhone

Our app and service providers collect the following data for the stated purposes. None of it is used to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

  • Diagnostics → Crash Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Diagnostics → Other Diagnostic Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Diagnostics → Performance Data: App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Identifiers → Device ID: Analytics, App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Purchases → Purchase History: Analytics, App Functionality; not linked to you.
  • Usage Data → Advertising Data: Analytics; not linked to you.
  • Usage Data → Product Interaction: Analytics; not linked to you.

We use three service providers. They process data only on our behalf, and we require each to give your data the same or equivalent protection as this Privacy Policy.

  • Mixpanel (usage analytics). Receives the usage events described under Usage analytics (Mixpanel) above. Mixpanel uses the network address of each request to estimate a city, region and country.
  • Sentry (crash reports). Receives the crash and error reports described under Crash reports (Sentry) above.
  • Superwall (subscriptions). Records purchases and restores as described under Purchases (Superwall and Apple) above.

What we do not do

Leap does not track you across other companies' apps or websites and shows no ads. It never asks for permission to track you, so the advertising identifier is not available to it. Its privacy manifest declares no tracking. We do not sell or rent your data.

Deleting your data

Leap has no in-app reset. Removing the app deletes your test results, practice history and settings. Apple's device backups and transfers may include the app's files. Leap cannot restore lost progress.

Analytics events, crash reports and purchase records already sent stay with Mixpanel, Sentry, Superwall and Apple under the retention settings of our accounts with them. They are tied to random identifiers, not to you by name. A purchase stays with your Apple ID.

For data held by our service providers, email us at support@setout.ai and we will respond within 30 days.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, to object to its use, and to complain to your data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If we learn that a child under 13 (or the minimum age where they live) has given us personal data, we will delete it. Parents or guardians who believe this has happened should email us.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date above. For material changes we will give notice before they take effect.
